Studies conclude that using softened water in the home leads to significantly reduced detergent consumption,
and energy usage

The Water Quality Association has concluded studies that show a significant reduction in the amount of detergents used when laundering clothes. Results of the study show a reduction in detergent use by 50%, better stain removal, and whiter clothes. In addition, it was found when using soft water, washing clothes in 60°F cold water vs. 100°F hot water yielded the same, if not better results compared to washing in hard water.

The study shows that not only will washing in softened water save consumers money, but the lower detergent discharge into the environment, combined with reduced energy costs, will also be environmentally friendly.

This follows results from a Battelle Institute study that evaluated the affect of soft vs. hard water on residential hot water heaters and instantaneous tankless hot water heaters. Results from this study concluded that standard hot water heaters retained the original factory efficiency rating over a 15-year lifetime, versus as much as a 48% loss of efficiency when using hard/un-softened water. Tankless water heaters operated with hard water failed after only 19 days of testing – but also maintained the original factory efficiency rating over a 15-year lifetime when supplied with softened water.

Presidents Anti-Cancer Panel Recommends Filtering Home Water

The President’s panel reviewing exposure to cancer causing agents and methods to reduce risk has released a report that recommends the use of home water filtering systems to prevent the ingestion of carcinogens. A press release from the Water Quality Association discusses this finding at http://wqa.org/pdf/cancerpanel.pdf.

Reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water systems are available from CAI on our “Reverse Osmosis” page in our Online Store. Consider the Microline TFC-4 or the GE/Merlin tankless system to provide excellent quality water for household cooking and drinking. Always look for the NSF 58 or WQA Gold system certification when shopping for an RO system to assure that you have a quality unit independently certified by a third party professional organization.

LEAD LEVELS IN DRINKING WATER RAISE CONCERNS

The Washington Post published a article on October 5th, 2004, describing lead contamination reporting issues that effect drinking water quality.  This story emphasizes the need for consumers to consider adding a "point-of-use" treatment like a Reverse Osmosis drinking water system to safeguard their water supply.  While most municipal systems do meet USEPA guidelines for lead levels in drinking water, the aging infrastructure along with other factors mean that their will inevitably be a growing number of contamination issues inside the US.  Visit the Washington Post online to read this article.  Look for a NSF or WQA certified system to make sure that the product will work as advertised
